Most dog owners want the best for their four-legged friend. Be it an expensive brand of dog food or a luxurious pet bed, most animal lovers realize the importance of giving an animal the best. When it comes to toys, though, many seem content simply to give the animal the first object available. For those that want the best quality of life for a furry best friend, it is wise to do a bit of research on the best dog toys.

Figuring out what makes a good dog toy can be a bit of a challenge. As a fair bit of the analysis will come down to the owner's best judgment, it is generally wise to spend time thinking about the animal in question. Some dogs, for example, may be extremely rough in their play and thus are ill suited for soft stuffed animals. Other dogs may be terrified of larger toys, making some brands impractical. Before purchasing any kind of expensive toy for your pet, spend a bit of time observing how they play with lesser toys. You may be surprised to find that the so-called "top" brands simply do not make products that are suited for your dogs.

As a rule, one should look for toys that are durable. Brands such as Kong tend to advertise overall toughness, and any toy that a large animal is unable to destroy tends to be worth its price. Also, make sure that any brand purchased is specified as both non-toxic and suited to animals. While it is likely that most toys targeted towards the canine population are animal safe, it never hurts to double check. It cannot be overstated, though, that any toy given to a dog should be designed specifically with dogs in mind. Toxic or not, small pieces of an easily destroyed toy can be deadly to many breeds.

The best toy for a dog should be durable, non-toxic, and created specifically with a dog in mind. These toys should be hard to destroy, easy to clean, and enjoyable for the animal. While no one brand may hold the market on having the "best" toy, there are a number of brands that tend to produce toys that are suitable for most breeds. If in doubt, use your own best judgment – if a toy looks like it will be harmful for your dog, your instincts are most likely correct. Give the same amount of care towards your dog's play as you would towards its nutrition, and you should be able to enjoy your companion's company for many years.
